The purification of the Chinese
As the French had bean over protected from several years ago, and the English had bean misapplied everywhere, how about Chinese? It should be purified, or not?
Some linguists claim that Chinese as the most advanced language in the world should be purified and protected very well. In fact, those who advocate the purification of the Chinese protect the language for the sake of our culture. As language is the identity of a nation, if the language is corrupted, the culture of the nation is corrupted too.
Some other philologers argue that those who advocate the purification of the Chinese are going to demolish our language. One language or dialect is neither better nor worse than another one. If a language can successfully function in communication, it is just a “good” language. To protect the purity of the Chinese is a waste of time and energy, especially at a time when there is the “information explosion”. What we should do is to enrich our language, by absorbing new words form other language or some other ways, for the purpose of adapting to the rapid development of the economic globalization.
In my opinion, however, it is very urgent to purify our national language. At first, it helps people to communicate more easily and effectively. Since China is a nation with many dialects, it can be very difficult for us to communicate with people from another area of China. For example, a man from Beijing maybe finds it very hard to understand what a man from Hongkong talks about. So it is important to use the standard Chinese pronunciation in domestic. Second, in the face of the reemergence of Pidgin English, we should not only learn English well to meet the challenge from globalization, but also pay great attention to the purification of national language so as to keep the independence of national identity. It must be admitted that the language is the most precious wealth of our culture. If we lose our language, we will be lost.
